AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED

Seems to be working great. I have been using it for more indoor projects at the moment. I need to get out and do some landscapes to fully check it out.

Replaces several favorites in my bag. I love that it retains a constant aperture of f/2.8 at all settings, making it much more useful for indoor available light. Image quality is equally good at all focal lengths. Takes 77mm filters, a big plus.Note that heavily used lenses may experience wear affecting some of the internal parts, which can degrade optical performance. Mine was showing degraded image quality at the 35mm setting after years of use. Had Nikon overhaul the lens and it now performs like new.Tough to go wrong with this lens.

I´ve owned this lens for over 10 years. Originally used on my F5. While new Nikon technologies have since come about, this is still a fantastic and versatile zoom. Fast f2.8 can help compensate for lack of VR but most may use for landscape use where it will be tripod mounted anyway. Sharp and great color as with all Nikkors. People seem to be ´frightened´ by the squeeky sound during AF operation but it does not affect performance at all. Because of this, you can find used lenses in good shape a greatly reduced price. Use it on my D810 with great results. A great travel lens or anywhere you need go wide to moderate wide angle. Highly recommended.

I picked up my first copy of this lens in 2006, and I can say without a doubt, this lens defined my photographic style.

In 2016, after having shot with this lens almost on a daily basis, I dropped it, and it would prove too expensive to fix. At that point, this lens was admittedly showing its age, and so I looked into modern alternatives as opposed to getting another copy of this lens.

I tried almost everything that seemed even remotely comparable: 20mm f/1.8, 14-24 f/2.8, 16-35 f/4, and in some way or another, I was still unsatisfied.

I ended up picking up another copy of this 17-35.

It´s unfortunate Nikon has abandoned this lens because I really think this focal length coverage is perfect, as is the fixed aperture across zoom lengths, and the fact that this lens is relatively compact and doesn´t move in and out.

I recently picked up a Z6, and it does breathe new life into this lens. Though the af isn´t as good as on my D850, the fact that it can nail the focus across the entire focal length is a blessing. (If I af fine tuned to 17mm, the image would always be a bit back focussed at 35mm).

I sincerely hope Nikon will make a Z mount version of this lens in the future. It´s my dream. But I don´t think it will come true...

To me the mark of a great lens is a lens that you wind up using a lot. The AF-S 17-35mm is such a lens. I bought mine in 1999--19 years ago! I moved to it from the fine 20-35, looking to it for a wider angle and a closer close focus. I have never been disappointed with those features. The sharpness of my sample is comparable to primes. It saves me from having to carry a half dozen other lenses, albeit many are faster. This is one of those Nikkors that Nikon got right from the start. I have used it on my F5s, and then on the D1, D2X and now D3 and D3S. I even use it occasionally with an adapter on my Leica SL! This lens has gone with me all over the world. As a landscape and travel photographer, this lens saves me having to change lenses often. If I have to go super wide, I turn to my 13 mm AIS but hauling that monster comes at a price. The 17-35 is quite compact and very easy to use; sharp enough for serious enlargements, and quite durable. Sadly, recently, I had to send it to Nikon for a $650 repair because the mid range of the zoom ring was hanging up. I have no idea why, but that´s been its first significant failure. Also unfortunate, is the fact that the price of these professional Nikkors keeps going up. I suppose we´re lucky it´s not worse! You don´t even have to be a pro to appreciate this fine little lens. (I say little because Nikon lenses appear to be growing in size, and thus lucky for us this design is old!). I seriously doubt that Nikon will replace the 17-35. They have the 14-24mm but it´s not nearly as practical as the 17-35. If I had an extra $1000 laying around I would buy another just in case mine suffers a hard failure. Get one while you can. It´s worth it, since I use it 85% of the time.

This is my ´´go to´´ lens - it´s on my camera (D850) most of the time. I use it for landscapes and street photography with excellent results even at full aperture. I most recently used it to take existing light shots of a live band at night with great results.

I have been using it with D850 a couple of months now and I am pretty satisfied with its performance, sharpness, colors particularly in landscape. For street photography at 2.8 edges are little soft but from 4.5 and above pretty well performing. Would definitely recommend to others.

Finally made the decision of upgrading all my Nikon DX gear to FX with the purchase of a D810 and the 17-35mm f2.8 lens.
I am a self-professed wide angle junkie and with such a large purchase, I could afford to buy only one gold-ringed, wide angle lens. My 3 choices were to be the ubiquitous 14-24mm f2.8, 16-35mm f4 and this lens. The 14-24 is legendary but for landscape photography, there are limited choices for ND filters. The 16-35mm f4 - at almost $1000 less was also considered but when I tried the 17-35 f2.8 at the store, I was sold on the spot.
The lens is very well made - it´s an older design but the optics are outstanding. Even when I pixel peep my photos at 17mm f2.8, I´m astounded at the clarity, sharpness and lack of falloff. If you shoot gray paper all day, obviously you´ll see flaws but out on the street and in the open environment, this lens is untouchable.
I am fearless with my new D810 and this lens. I have stood in places and set up in situations that I never dared to venture in the past; I´m shooting hand-held in light that I would have never done before and on a tripod shooting indoor or outdoor architecture, this lens is fast, sharp and produces some of the best images I have ever seen on a digital camera.
It´s not one of Nikon´s most popular lenses but it certainly is one of the best.

I have had this lens only a short time, however I have made many images with available light (f2.8) and daylight work with apps of f4-5.6 at much of the zoom range. Sharpness is excellent, compact lens, a little heavy but that adds to stability of shooting in low light and low shutter speeds (as low as 1/10th sec) hand held rendering sharp images. I would certainly urge any photog doing photojournalistic or event work to include this lens in your bag. It does take some knowledge of short lenses to get the image you re looking for. Note - I have used another photogs lens of this type prior to purchasing one. For my work it is an ´´everyday lens!´´
