    My go-to lens

Posted by Eric Walters on January 24, 2023

I originally purchased this lens back in Feb 2016, I'm writing this almost 7 years later. This was my first prime lens. I was going to Iceland to see the aurora and wanted to have a lens I could be sure to catch the aurora with. Not only did this lens not let me down, it's become my go-to lens and pretty much doesn't leave my camera. It takes low light photos effortlessly, the focus is reliably quick and sharp, and I simply love the way the photos look; it's excellent for portraiture. If this lens died today, I would buy it again tomorrow.

    excellent

excellent little lens. i use this on a d3400 so it is in essence a 50mm. regardless, it's on my camera 90 percent of the time and produces excellent results at the price point. i would never sell this lens.

Stop what you're doing and BUY IT!

Posted by Anonymous on February 4, 2020

This lens is an absolute must for any arsenal! Theres absolutely nothing you CANT do with it. It creates very sharp, clear images and adapts well to any situation. Purchased 2 weeks ago and have yet to swap lenses due to its immense quality, and overall usefulness. For under 200 bucks, you're crazy to let this one pass.

    Great Optics and Price

Posted by Marlee on November 7, 2019

Got this in today and tested for my son´s DX camera and love it! The color and clarity this lens renders with is stellar for the price point. I got it on sale and saved $30.00 which is icing on the cake. My son will really enjoy this on Christmas day. I do have to say, I am a bit disappointed in most lens builds these days and don´t like all the outward plastic. But, at the same time, the DX kit lens with my son´s D3100 is about 8 years old, with a plastic mount and is still in perfect working order. Go Nikon! I am about to add the 24mm f 1.8G ED and the 85mm f1.8G lenses to my full frame kit, and the worries about plastic barrels have been holding me up. Those are a bit pricier than this 35mm f1.8G. I have finally decided that if Ford motor company can put a plastic manifold intake on my V8 engine and it still runs 13 years later, I´ll probably get my money´s worth out of the nicer Nikkor lenses. One thing I am sure of is that Nikkor glass renders beautifully.

    Worse than 18-140 zoom

Posted by Max on September 22, 2019

Bought this to complement a stock lens (18-140 mm) for my 5300, but returned it 2 days later after multiple shots with both lenses to compare:
    Pros:
    - compact
    - nice bokeh
    Cons:
    - not sharp (landscapes are less sharp than with my 18-140 lens with different shutter and aperture settings);
    - poor performance in low light even at max open aperture (again sharpness)
    - some focus problems (not sure what was going on, but had more blurred images)
    - no VR
I guess, the low light performance depends not only on max aperture ratio, but also on lens diameter which is much less here compared to 18-140 lens.
Conclusion: if you already have 18-140 as a kit, you don´t need this lens as it less sharp. If you want a blurred background for portraits - just zoom in and step back. And don´t forget that this 35 mm is like 50mm for DX cameras, so not everything will fit if you shoot landscapes.

    Excellent avec ses limites

Posted by Winny on February 13, 2018

Outstanding Lens at an Outstanding Price

Posted by Opwe on October 13, 2017

Saw this lens as an open box at a big box store. The price was reduced and I said, what the heck. I hit the lottery with this lens. This is an outstanding lens that more than exceeded my expectations.
